PaperBackSwap.com

  • Dec. 10th, 2007 at 11:53 AM
I found a new website that I'm really loving thusfar.  I've lamented lately about how stupid i feel i've become due to the fact that i no longer read for pleasure.  After participating in NaNoWriMo I decided that i want to make myself read more.  It's not often that one resolves to make themselves do something fun.  haha.
I can't even remember where I had first heard of the website PaperBackSwap.com.  I just remember knowing it existed and I entered the url last week.  After reviewing what it was about i decided to join and i started posting books which i am willing to trade.
The site is kind of a cross between a free Library and Netflix.  Like a library you are looking for and finding a book you'd like to read.  If it's a popular book or if they dont have it you can add yourself to the wait list and eventually someone should post it.  Like Netflix, you do all of this online and the books are mailed by other members right to your door.  The big difference between the two is that once you get a book it's yours to do with as you wish.  You can keep it, or read it and swap it again.  Each time you swap a book you earn credits which are good for ordering more books.  The only out of pocket expense is the postage to mail a requested book to another member (which generally is very low.  Typical mass market paperbacks can be sent for as little as about $1.50).  Then when someone sends you a book you are getting it at no expense to you.
So last Friday night I dug up some books that I no longer had an interest in.  My "Bookshelf" (list of posted books) is pretty ecclectic, ranging in topics from humor to fiction to new age.  I'm amazed at some of the things that people are looking for, and the books that have left my door.  I posted about 20 books so far.  I've mailed out 4 books already, and I've ordered 4 more!  Mind you this is all since last Thursday!
Some of my unusual requests.... I had a book on Mendhi, which I bought probably 8 years ago when i was all interested in it.  I posted that and to my surprise there were 3 people who were just hoping and wishing that someone would post that book.  wow!  I also was surprised to find that this Ascension Handbook was on someone's wish list and I actually mailed that one out yesterday.  There are literally people out there looking for any type of book you can think of.
Even if you are not an incredibly avid reader I would encourage you to join this club.  After all, it's free.  And you can't even get book for book credit when turning books into a used bookstore.

NaNoWriMo update

  • Nov. 24th, 2007 at 10:46 AM

Hey, i realized i haven't posted a nanowrimo update in a little while.  Things are going amazingly well.  I'm only about 700 words away from 40K, but it has me realizing that i dont think my story is acutally going to be completed in 50K.  I feel that barring anything unforseen that i will definately make it to the 50K mark within the allotted amount of time, but the question now is will i actually have my story done before the end of the month.
While the only thing that techinically matters right now is word count, i would like to have the whole story done by the end of the month if possible.  I know how i am. I get distracted easily, and when i no longer have the pressure of meeting the deadline on me then i will start to slack, forget about it, and start doing other things.  not to mention the fact that the house is becoming a total wreck because i've only been doing the basics as far as cleaning goes.  I would like to try to have the whole story told by Nov 30th or i'll likely never complete it.
well, i better get back to writing.  I'm going to a concert tonight and i wont be able to write after I get home.  I didn't sleep well last night and i'll probably be very tired, etc.  so off i go to try and hit at least 2-3K today.  wish my characters luck!  things are about to get majorly crazy for them.

Does this make me old?

What in the world is the appeal of Chris Brown's voice? It doesn't sound nice or soulful. It sounds like he's got a cold, or he's in puberty.
i just don't understand the sudden interest in all of these nasaly sounding guys. (That goes for you too, JT. You may get me with a nice beat now and then, but overall, i'm left scratching my head)

Brownies from heaven...

  • Nov. 21st, 2007 at 11:04 AM
One fo the drawbacks I've noticed from participating in The Grocery Game is that i sometimes find myself buying a product that shouldn't really be buying, just because it's on sale and I have the coupon.  I especially find i do this with baking mixes.  I'll buy brownies, and cake mixes, but I rarely make those types of things at home since my boyfriend is diabetic, and I dont want to get "stuck" eating the whole thing.
However I recently made a heavenly discovery.  A few weeks ago these new Ghiradelli Brownie mixes were on sale.  I bought 2 different kinds with my coupon.  I was craving brownies last night, and I got a call from my sister in law that she was coming over, so I figured that this would be the perfect opportunity to make some and not have to eat them all myself.
I made the Ultimate Fudge mix.  I couldn't resist the fudgy looking topping.  The box said that after they were baked and the topping was applied you should wait for them to completely cool.  Excuse me?  how am i suppose to WAIT for brownies.  Forget that.  I cut them up while they were nice and warm.  They fell apart when I took them out of the pan.  They were so moist and delicious.  With the fudge topping it was like eating a molton chocolate cake.  I was eating it looking like one of those women from those Warm Delights commercials who are like making out with their fork.
Highly recommended

Queen guitarist May named university chancellor
i dont know why this almost made me want to cry from happy. being someone who loves science and wishes i had persued something science related in school instead of the path i took, probably has something to do with it. i also love that it shows he is honestly passionate about what he wanted to study.
and i just love Queen more than i love... uh.. well. I love them a lot.

Planets! Planets everywhere!!1

  • Nov. 14th, 2007 at 11:56 PM
Saw this paragraph in this article.
"This is the first clear evidence for planet formation in the Pleiades, and the results we are presenting may well be the first observational evidence that terrestrial planets like those in our solar system are quite common," said Joseph Rhee of the University of California Los Angeles, who led the study.

when i read statements like "evidence that terrestrial plantes like those in our solar system are quite common" it boggles my mind. Is this some revelation? how could one NOT thing that we are common? look at the billions/trillions, etc of stars out there in the sky. do you really thing that we are like a one in a google happening? do people really need convincing? i'm so confused.

They added these cute little widgets to the nanowrimo site. you can view my progress so far. i'm still very behind, but i'm slowly catching up. to work at a steady pace (1667 words/day) i should be at 15K, but as you can see, i'm less than halfway. I have yet to start writing today though. I'm about to kill someone and i'm a little nervous about writing that scene.

I've also had a mini crisis as i realized that i haven't really done a whole lot to show what is so spectacular about the relationship between my MC and her love interest. There's no time at this point to go back and work on that. I'll have to save that for later. I must push forward past this difficult chapter.

NaNoWriMo

  • Nov. 6th, 2007 at 1:04 PM
When I was growing up I had always dreamed of writing a book. I had stories flowing through my mind and I wanted so badly to get them out. I had a toy typewriter (completely functional, just mostly made of plastic) which i would sit on my bedroom floor and i would start typing away about my story. 1.5 pages into said story and my plot would fizzle. 1.5 pages. Man, that's depressing.
So last week I was reading someone's journal and they mentioned NaNoWriMo. I looked it up, completely expecting to see some anime thing or something of the like.
Well, apparently November is not just Turkey or Tofurkey time. It's also National Novel Writing Month. The assignment: Write a novel of at least 50,000 words in 30 days. no small feat. The point isn't to win awards or even get published, but just to get those trapped ideas, characters and plot lines out of your head and onto paper (or i your computer hard drive). Editing can come later. Perfection may come another year, but for now, become a word pumping machine. Your plot can be as silly or as serious as you like.
So I learned about Nanowrimo on Nov 1st. I was already at a slight disadvantage because I hadn't thought about this task at all. I hadn't considered what story I might write, and I hadn't a plot to work with. I pulled something out of thin air and started writing. I was doing well (over 4000 words) when inspiration struck.
I'm not going to reveal too much about my plot or characters, but I started over yesterday. Day 5, and now 8,000 words behind I was starting from scratch.
I've done pretty well since yesterday though. I have over 3100 words on my new novel. I'm hoping to be caught up by mid month. Last night I did some very stream of consciousness writing. My plot has definite direction and I have a plan in mind, but it was amazing to just type the first thing to come to mind. It really worked for me. I worked with the AIM room "nanosprints" and did 10 minute writing sprints of 400-500 words each. It was great, and I learned a lot about my characters.
Trying to extend my story beyond the first few chapters is going to prove interesting. I'm only doing this to prove to myself that I can do it. I've always wanted to. I never even believed in myself. But this time I want to do it.
Keep an eye on my progress.

 Hey Blog readers..
I realize that not everyone who is reading this blog may be on LJ, and it may not be as easy for you to follow all the happenings and blabber that i'm sharing with the masses.  I just wanted to point out the syndication links on the left side.  RSS & ATOM.  Make sure you use those links with your feed reader of choice and keep yourself up to date!

p.s. i wanted some nice moist brownies so bad.  i bought some and they are dry as a bone.  what a disappointment....

Looking online for Insurance

  • Oct. 30th, 2007 at 10:09 AM
I've noticed over the past 10 years or so a real trend in insurance. People are going to the web to get insurance quotes, and shop around for the best rates instead of contacting an insurance agent as they would in the past. Personally, I love this trend, and I'm one of those people who has been shopping for insurance this way since it started. I don't really understand the advantage of an insurance agent over directly dealing with the insurance company.
I'm also someone who really wants to shop around for the best rates, and it looks like this insurance quote website is one of those places where you can indeed do that all in one place. I love the simplicity of getting many quotes all at once. I don't need to run to 10 different websites. Just like here in the "real world", why would I run to 5 different stores when I can get what I need all in one place?
I'm also going to have to remember to bookmark this website for insurance quotes. I'm hoping that in the near future I'll be able to be self employed, and I'll be in the market for a new life insurance policy. I'm hoping they'll be able to find me the best rates!

Blogsvertise

  • Oct. 29th, 2007 at 1:43 PM
I had heard from [info]sm00bs about a site called Blogsvertise. It's a site that links up advertisers with bloggers who are interested in getting paid to write blog articles about said advertisers. She has been doing this for over a year now and has been pleased with it. I'm also interested in it.
My whole point in creating this blog was to have a way to share my opinions of products, services, movies, etc. I feel like I have a lot to say! I think that Blogsvertise will help me add more interesting content and hopefully introduce both myself and my blog readers to some cool companies. The fact that you get paid to write the entries certainly doesn't hurt either. You know we could all use a few extra bucks now and then.
So be on the lookout for some new, interesting stuff here on [info]calla_flower courtesy of Blogsvertise! I'm excited about it.

There's an article today on Yahoo about Ghost Tourism.  It's certainly something that interests me.  This article pretty much is debunking many of the so called "ghost tours" that you can find around the country.  While I firmly believe in ghosts, I think there's a lot of stuff that can happen which is a trick of the light or your mind fooling you.  But I do believe in ghosts.  Does that make sense?  haha.  Going back and reading it I'm thinking... does it make sense to say that I both believe that people are fooling themselves, but yet I believe in ghosts?  lol.  I dont know..  but I digress.
Have you or would you ever consider a Ghost tour?  I definately enjoy going to haunted places.  And as I said in the last paragraph I have indeed seen ghosts.  But I've never gone to a supposedly haunted place in search of spirits.  I would like to go to a couple places though.  The Eastern State Penitentiary  is one of them, and it's in my own back yard.  I'd also love to go to the Farnsworth Inn  in Gettysburg.
My luck would be that i would go to these places and not see anything out of the ordinary.  I might as well go to my Uncle Bob's house where I've seen and heard 2 spirits and I know there's a third hanging around somewhere.  Maybe some other time i'll talk about the other ghosties I've seen.  That would be a fun Halloween post.  :-)

Go see this movie.

if you haven't seen this movie yet. GO. Go before it's too late.

Listering Whitening Strips

  • Oct. 22nd, 2007 at 1:13 PM
Last weekend I got an offer for a new Bzz Campain for the Listerine Quick Disolving Whitening strips.  I was pretty excited because I'd seen the ads on TV and wondered how they worked.
By now most people have tried out some type of home whitening product.  Some are fine and some are a hassle.  I never really found the Crest whitening strips to be a big pain in the butt or anything. I have used the Rembrant whitening trays though and i have to say they were annoying.  But despite some positive experiences in the past i was interested in trying this new product.
i have found that they work rather well.  They weren't annoying or uncomfortable.  It does take a little time for them to disolve... maybe 5-10 min, but at least you can slap them on and go to sleep if you want to and you dont have to worry about keeping them on your teeth too long.
I found that you have to be a little careful about putting them on your teeth and you have to make sure your hands are dry.  if the strip gets folded over on itself it will stick and it's impossible to get it apart again.
They gave me a ton of strips to hand out to people.  I am looking forward to going to work on Monday and sharing them.

Spaghetti & Meat sauce

  • Oct. 11th, 2007 at 10:30 PM
Spaghetti is always a simple and easy choice for dinner. It's done quickly. Everyone loves it. But with the recent heath issues in our household, pasta and meat sauces have gone from being staples in our diet to being something we've had to avoid. Two products I'm glad to have found are Dreamfields pasta and SmartGround.
Due to diabetes we've had to knock a lot of the carbs out of our life. This is hard for me because I love my potatoes and pasta. I thought I’d try the Dreamfields pasta, which boasts only 5 net carbs per serving. I tell ya... it was great. It tastes exactly like regular pasta, and cooks the same too. The best part was that it didn't raise my boyfriends blood sugar. I've pretty much started using it all the time now, even when he's working and isn't home for dinner.
Tonight I took it a step further by making my meat sauce with SmartGround. I have used some of Lightlife's products before, mainly their Gimmie Lean ground beef style. It was okay, but I felt that it left my food tasting a little off, as though you could tell that there was meat substitute in the dish. I found that the SmartGround didn't have this problem at all. The SmartGround broke into pieces much more easily than the Gimme Lean products, and it really gave my sauce the appearance of having ground meat. Now I can hardly say the flavor mimicked ground beef. To be honest I don’t really think it had much of an effect on the flavor at all. However I'll take no effect on the flavor over a negative effect any day. The texture was also pleasing. And how can you feel that you've gone wrong when you read that nutrition label. Only 70 calories per serving. No fat and no cholesterol (another health issue at home).
I feel like I can have my kitchen back. I can make the meals I enjoy without compromise.

Working from Home

  • Oct. 10th, 2007 at 10:43 PM
so.. I've decided what I want to do with the rest of my life....
I what to have about 40 different part time jobs and I will just hope that all that money adds up to enough to live on.
so.. hmmm.. what can I do...

Well.. apparently Blogvertising works

  • Oct. 9th, 2007 at 12:25 PM

I saw an entry on [info]sm00bs journal the other day about mystery shoppers, and now i'm really considering doing it.  haha.
I dont know.  It kind of appeals to me.  the only thing that concerned me was that i didn't see any where where it specifically discusses how much you get paid per assignment.  If they say "we're only giving you $10 to visit this store, then write a detailed narrative about your experience" then i dont know that it would be worth it.  But if it can get me a few extra bucks a month with not a whole lot of effort i might as well give it a shot.
i'll have to do some more research.

could someone recommend a good DIY forum and/or website?  I have some things in the house i want to do and of course i have little to no idea how to accomplish them.  The Man is hardly any help.  he would rather pretend we have no issues.

the main thing is that we have these faux windows in our kitchen.  i dont really mind them other than i think they are completely stupid.  the realtor said they gave the house the illusion of being wider.  I dont know about that... Anyway.. one is kind of half inbetween the kitchen and living room and really prevents you from being able to hang any art, or putting up a bookcase or something.  I want to close that one off totally, and i want to turn the other one into pantry space.  they are just spaces like 6 inches deep, with miniblinds hanging in them, so i could ditch the mini blind, add shelves and curtains and fill it with cans of soup or jars of stuff.  i should take some pics of them and post so that you can see what they really look like.

BzzAgent had a new Barilla Tortellini campaign start last week and i signed up.  hey.. free food.  why would i say no to that?  Especially knowing how I love carbs/pasta.
I got my kit rather quickly and it included 2 bags of tortellini.
My mom was up this weekend so we made the tortellini yesterday for lunch.  I was surprised to find that it was very tender when prepared, much like fresh pasta.  However the small bag, which is the same size that they sell in stores did not yeild a whole lot.   it was barely enough for the 2 of us to eat.  i guess you are really SUPPOSED to eat a salad or something with it.  haha, but you know me.  salad?  no thx.  haha
Anyhow i enjoyed it, but later i was at the grocery store and we saw that the price for the same size bag that we had was about $4.  i think that's a crazy price to pay when you can get frozen tortellini for $1 per bag on sale. They did have bigger bags and they were about $5 each.  I really was deterred by the price.
If i buy this product in the future, it will probably be a splurge.  I dont think it's worth the price.

Cheesy yummy Panini

  • Oct. 1st, 2007 at 12:36 PM
I didn't pack lunch today for work.  This inevitably leaves the excruciating decision "what do I eat for lunch?"  There's always the quick choices of fast food, but after looking refreshing my memory and looking at the nutrition info for a popular fast food restaurant a couple weeks ago, I decided a 800 calorie lunch wasn't the direction I wanted to go right now.  Instead I headed to the grocery store.
Granted there are a lot of poor choices to make at the grocery store.  You have to be careful.  I went to the frozen food section.  I was craving cheese.  Lots of melty cheese, which I was convinced I wouldn't find.  Stouffer's red box meals were on sale so I got a Smoked Turkey Club Panini
It completely fit the bill.  I was surprised at how cheesy it actually was, and the flavor of the cheese was great.  I have had their Lean Cuisine Panini before, and they are good.  This was a little yummier, but you could also plainly see that it wasn't as healthy as the leaner alternative.
The nutrition information is on the link above.  The calories are pretty average, but it's high in fat.  And if the relatively small sandwich can leave you feeling satisfied until dinner, you are lucky.  But still, I enjoyed this choice as an alternative to a cheesy, greasy sandwich at a fast food joint.  Maybe the smaller portion can help me learn some restraint.
